Durban North police laud arrest in uMhlanga fraud case

Furniture valued at R130 000 was recovered in the arrest of two suspects related to the fraud case.

DURBAN North police have praised the efforts of two detectives in securing the arrest of two men behind an uMhlanga fraud case. Last week, Det Sergeant Busi Ngubane and Det Sergeant Sibusiso Linda arrested two men wanted in connection with the fraud case involving a furniture store in uMhlanga.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the men had ordered several couches from a store located at Gateway shopping centre and had faked proof of payment making off with furniture valued at R130 000.

“The suspects had purchased the items online and sent through a fake proof of payment. The store discovered three days later that no money had come into their accounts and opened a case of fraud at the station. Our investigations revealed the suspects had used two truck drivers to pick the items up. After interviewing the men the detectives discovered the items were in Edendale with one of the suspects. We managed to stop the suspect a few streets away from his home and questioned him.

“He initially denied any wrongdoing and attempted to further mislead the police by taking them to his neighbour’s house. Our detectives had confirmed his address and knew they were being led to the wrong house. Eventually we were taken to the correct address. The suspect seemed to have been tipped off because when police arrived the stolen furniture was in the process of being removed from his home. In the process we also recovered a vehicle, an Audi A1, stolen in a hijacking case in Durban central earlier this year. A second suspect was arrested through ongoing investigations while a third remains at large,” he explained.

An outstanding piece of the stolen furniture was also recovered in Ashburton.

Deokaran said the detectives were working hard to secure a lengthy conviction in the fraud case.

“The station commander would like to commend the detectives on their arrest and we as a station are proud of their efforts to bring the suspects to justice,” he said.
