SA Weather service warns of fake news posts

There is a sustained high risk of further severe weather conditions over the eastern half of the country for the next three days.

THE South African Weather Service (SAWC) has warned members of the public not to share fake footage of the tornado that hit the Mpolweni settlement near Wartburg in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday afternoon.

Two people have been reported killed and as many as 20 or more were left injured after the tornado’s devastating run through the town.

Its impact was felt in Durban where trees were uprooted in some areas and the tornado left scenes of destruction in its wake.

And while emergency services are coming to the aid of those affected by the tornado the SAWC said fake or hoax news is creating confusion, fear and panic among the public.

“A hoax message contains part of the truth with added inaccuracies. We therefore urge the public to respond only to severe storm information sourced from reputable agencies with the mandate to issue and distribute weather-related warnings, such as the South African weather Service (SAWS) as well as national and provincial Disaster Management.”

The service added that there is a sustained high risk of further severe weather conditions over the eastern half of the country for the next three days with a possibility of strong damaging winds, hail as well as heavy downpours, SAWC said in a statement.

They added that the risk of flooding is very high.
