Blue bag shortage dampens garden refuse service

"DSW is currently having challenges with stock of blue garden refuse bags," says the eThekwini Municipality's Mandla Nsele.

NORTH Durban residents who make use of the eThekwini Municipality’s blue bag garden refuse removal service have been left in the lurch without a blue bag in sight.

Acting head of communications for the eThekwini Municipality, Mandla Nsele encouraged residents to visit a refuse drop off centre until the issue is resolved.

“DSW is currently having challenges with stock of blue garden refuse bags. We request residents to use our garden sites to drop off their garden refuse. Residents are allowed to dispose a bakkie load of garden refuse at any DSW garden site for free, once a week,” he said.

Refuse sites north of Durban include: the Malacca Road Garden Refuse Community Drop off Centre in Durban North and the Garden Refuse Community Drop Off Centre on Flanders Road in Mount Edgecombe.

Using the drop off centres is an eco friendly alternative for residents who wish to avoid the plastic bags, added Nsele.

Ward councillor, Shaun Ryley said the issue had been ongoing for weeks.

“DSW has stated that there is a shortage in supply. They haven’t said why, but they are not delivering the bags. Residents pay an extra amount for the service. I have requested that residents who pay are credited on their accounts for the bags they didn’t receive. The municipality has agreed and said they will credit residents. I have been told by a DSW official that residents who pay for the service can put their garden refuse out in any coloured bag for collection, so they can use black or orange bags,” he said.
