uMhlanga resident hopes to start backgammon club

71-year-old resident is on a mission to form a backgammon club in North Durban.

BACKGAMMON is said to be one of the oldest board games in the world and its timeless quality is what drew uMhlanga resident, Bob Humphreys to the game. The 71-year-old is on a mission to form a backgammon club in North Durban.

Humphreys who has been playing the game for the last 40 years said it was a friend who taught him how to play.

“I used to play chess until a friend of mine introduced me to the game of backgammon. He was considered to be one of the top five players in the world at the time and it’s through him that I learnt about the game. My passion and love grew for the game as the years went so much so that I would like to form a backgammon club in the area. The other facet of the game that drew me to it is that it is quicker than chess,” he quipped.

Humphreys said while he has played the game with his partner and friends, he hoped the formation of the club would draw fans of backgammon.

“I think there are a number of people who play backgammon and perhaps for many there’s no avenue to share their love for the game. I know there are several chess clubs across Durban but as far as I’m aware there aren’t any backgammon clubs. The aim would be to form the club and perhaps begin hosting a couple of tournaments,” he said.
