Local couple share love of open road

Buzz and Hildegard Bolton were part of a group of 16 riders from the Durban Harley Owners Group (HOG) who rode more than 2 000 kilometres to Swakopmund in Namibia.

LA Lucia’s adventure-seeking couple, Buzz and Hildegard Bolton recently completed the Skeleton Coast Rally. The couple were part of a group of 16 riders from the Durban Harley Owners Group (HOG) who rode more than 2 000 kilometres to Swakopmund in Namibia. The Rally, hosted by the HOG Namibia Chapter, saw riders from all over the country gather in the coastal city, which lies more than 300 kilometres west of Windhoek.

“The rally is held every two years and we’ve done a few rides into Namibia and every time we complete the journey we long for the open road again,” explained Buzz. “The scenery throughout the ride is spectacular and because the ride is so well organised you love every second on the road. We did have a few long stretches to get through but that’s part of the journey,” he said.

Hildegard, who also owns and rides a Harley Davidson bike, rode pillion behind Buzz on the trip. She said the journey was made more special for her because of a reunion.

“I was born in Namibia and I went to high school in Swakopmund. So part of the journey was getting together with a group of high school friends who I hadn’t seen in years in the city. It made the ride that more special. We were on the road for about two weeks, there and back, and I think travelling by motorbike brings you closer to the adventure. Buzz and I have done this trip a number of times and we are now hoping to ride the West Coast Rally in October,” she said.

Buzz said he would recommend the trip to any Harley Davidson owner or any bike rider hoping to ride from Durban to Namibia.

“There were days where we averaged more than 200 kilometres and it was the HOG members were very safety conscious throughout the trip. We were accompanied by an emergency vehicle and our lead rider would always signal if there was danger up ahead. We’ve done this trip more than 15 times but we still can’t get enough and I would recommend this journey to anyone seeking adventure on their bike,” he said.
