BROTHERHOOD, loyalty and respect, are three tenets that the East Coast Motorcycle Club share and embody and that was on display for everyone to see on Saturday as close to 100 bikers gathered at Blue Lagoon for the National Diwali Run.
The idea behind the National Diwali Run was to unite biking clubs around the country to provide a 1 000 families with a small grocery hamper consisting of basic food items.
The initiative was started in Johannesburg and driven by the Murugas SMC and then spread to various provinces including KZN.
On Saturday, various Durban based bike clubs including, East Coast Motorcycle Club, Streetfighters, X Men Durban, O’B Bikers, Rebel Warriors and the Syndicate Motorcycle Club were on hand to donate items to various organisations including Bobbi Bear and various other charitable initiatives.
A total of 500 hampers were packed in special buckets and the East Coast Motorcycle Club contributed more than 350 of those hampers.
Speaking to Northglen News, club president, Pravesh Ramfol, said he was blown away by the support of everyone involved.
“I think the biking community has shown the heart they have for the less fortunate. After posting an appeal on our Facebook page the response we received was just awesome and the donations of various items for the hampers was fantastic. We hope to make this event an even bigger one next year. For us Diwali is a time of giving and that’s why we decided to get involved in this wonderful initiative,” he said.
Fellow club member, Viven Bandiah also concurred with Ramfol.
“Everywhere we ride around the country we’ve seen that everyone is struggling. So this Diwali we decided to do something different and give back to the community at large. We decided on delivering the hampers to various families across Durban and our members of our club and all the other biking clubs that participated in the drive were fantastic. Everyone embraced this initiative wholeheartedly and that’s awesome to see,” Bandiah said.
Club Treasurer, Ravi Govender said members of the East Coast Motorcycle Club often dig deep into their own pockets to help the needy.
“For this project the club, among its members, raised R42 000. I must also acknowledge the generosity of Streetfighters MC of raising R16 000,” he said.
