Church market to keep doors open

A beacon to the community, the church contributes to various upliftment initiatives including a soup kitchen that serves hot meals twice a week.

IN a bid to keep their doors open, the Durban Methodist Church (DNMC) will host a market on Saturday, 26 October at the Golden Hours market on Uitsig Road in Durban North from 10am until 3pm. There is no entry fee to the market and all are welcome.

Church administrator, Leigh-Ann Aingworth said the church may have to close if they cannot raise the funds they need to cover running costs.

“This church has been here for 80 years, but our membership is decreasing and there is no money. We are desperately trying to keep the church open,” she said.

Aingworth explained that the church needs to pay a sum of R50 000 each month to the Methodist Church of South Africa, which pays the minister’s stipend and covers the insurance and maintenance of the church building.

“We also teach sewing skills to ladies in the community here at the church. They can then use those skills to earn an income,” added Aingworth.

The market promises to be a fun day out for the family to enjoy. There will be live music by local songbird, Ruby Rose as well as a tombola for the children (and adults). There will be a wide variety of stalls with all sorts of wares on sale including baby clothes, spices, wood work, curry, hot dogs, pancakes, and scones. The church members will set up a few stalls including a craft table selling hand-made wares, a jewellery stall, book stall and ‘second time around,’ a stall that will sell pre-owned items.

“You know what they say, one man’s rubbish is another’s treasure,” said Aingworth.

Community members who want to sell at the market can secure a stall space for R200 and there are about 20 spots still available. Call the church on 031 563 5868.
