La Lucia clinic expansion welcomed

The City are set to expand the clinic and build a new prefab building to help provide a full package of health services to the community.

SINCE its inception, the La Lucia Clinic has been a welcome addition to the area, providing comprehensive care to the community.

However, in recent times it has faced several challenges, one of which has been the space to carry out its daily duties.

On average, around 2 000 people make use of the clinic on a monthly basis and often patients, wait in the entrance area to the La Lucia Library.

Now the City are set to expand the clinic and build a new prefab building to help provide a full package of health services to the community.

In an email to newly elected ward councillor, Nicole Bollman, the City said work on the expansion of the clinic was due to start this month.

The City said it’s approach was three-pronged.
1. To improve space and accommodate full package of health services as prescribed by the Ideal Clinic (National Health Quality Standards for clinics).
2. To improve compliance with infection, prevention and control.
3. To accommodate the three streams of care (mother child and women health, minor ailments and chronic services).

Bollman has welcomed the expansion saying it would be of benefit to the community of Durban North and its surrounds.

“The clinic currently shares its offices with the La Lucia Library in the community service centre and I think the need to expand its range of services and accommodate the different streams of care was what drove this project. I believe the newly built structure will be fenced off to prevent theft. By adding more space, the facility can comply with clinic compliance standards. So many residents and workers make use of this clinic so it is vital to the area,” she said.
