Whale carcass washes up on uMhlanga Beach

As the decaying body attracts sharks, the beach has been closed to the public.

A MASSIVE Humpback whale carcass washed up on uMhlanga Main Beach early on Sunday morning. As the decaying body attracts sharks, the beach has been closed to the public.

Dewet Geldenhuys of the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) said authorities are on the scene assessing the situation.

“It was reported just after 5am this morning. It’s a dead whale that washed up. It’s decomposing. The possibility of sharks in the water is high. There is most probably some type of pollution in the water as well. Authorities are on the scene and making plans to remove the whale. Last time a whale washed up, it took four days to remove, it definitely won’t be done in a day. It is huge it weighs tons, so they can’t hoist or lift the whale up. They may wait for the tide to come in,” he said.
