UPDATE: City of Durban responds to refuse collection delay

DSW is experiencing service interruptions due to ongoing illegal strike action by EPWP workers.

ILLEGAL strike action is to blame for disruptions in the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit (DSW) refuse collection schedule that has left bags of rubbish piling up on residential verges in Durban North.

Ward 36 councillor, Shaun Ryley said that some parts of Umgeni Park and Prospect Hall had been neglected yesterday while parts of Parkhill were affected today.

The backlog in collection is due to strike action in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), said eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela.

“The Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit is experiencing service interruptions due to ongoing illegal strike action by EPWP workers. Refuse service collection and street sweeping in and around Durban is affected.  DSW is doing all it can to resolve the issues as speedily as possible for service to go back to normal. Residents are requested to keep all refuse within their properties. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused,” he said.

Councillor Ryley said residents could opt to take their bags to the dump sites at Roadhouse Crescent or Malacca Road as well.
