Rhino Peak Challenge offers a platform for giving

The event plays a significant part in raising money for four organisations that play a vital role in protecting endangered species.

HAVING raised over a million Rand in the past four years, the Rhino Peak Challenge will once again this year offer a platform for a number of elite athletes, social athletes, influential people and corporate teams to band together to support a number of important causes on Saturday, 5 October.

The event plays a significant part in raising money for four organisations that play a vital role in protecting endangered species – the Rhino Conservation Project, the Maloti Drakensberg Vulture Project, Wildlife ACT and the Drakensberg Crane Project.

With the Southern Drakensberg providing a pristine backdrop for the 21km event that will see runners and walkers scale the famous Rhino Peak, conserving and supporting the Maloti Drakensberg World heritage Site is the unifying driver behind the event.

Trail running star Kane Reilly will return in 2019, as he hopes to increase his pledge amount for the various environmental foundations that benefit from the event.

“It is super tough because it is almost straight up and then straight back down,” Reilly said.

“This is what makes the event what it is. It is not an event where you just raise money, there is effort involved both physically and in securing pledges.

“What adds to the challenge is that the event is at altitude and even though I enjoy the route because it suits me, it’s going to be tough.”

Reilly has been fortunate enough to run throughout the world and although the event focuses on rhino, crane and bearded vulture conservation, he is committed to a wider idea of conservation throughout South Africa.
