Community aids in nabbing knife-wielding suspect

The knife was found in one of the properties the suspect used to try and escape.

A 35-year old man was arrested recently after he tried to stab a local security guard.

Sandile Msebenzi, who works for the Upper Umhlanga Security Trust (UUST), said a man wielding a home-made knife attacked him last Friday in Kingston Drive, uMhlanga.

Msebenzi said he intercepted the man as he tried to gain entry to a resident’s home.

“When the head of security, Hayden Conradie, was on his way to meet up with a client, he noticed this young man walking up and down the street who looked suspicious. He then called me at the office to make a drive to check,” said Msebenzi.

According to Msebenzi, the man pulled out the knife when he started questioning him and attempted to stab him before escaping on foot.

“The suspect kept fence hopping from one household to another. Luckily we made an arrest with the help of the residents who noticed a man standing inside the yard. The homeowner had waited in front of the gate for the suspect to make his way to his direction. By that time Hayden and I were already there to make the arrest. Upon the arrest, the suspect pointed out where he had hidden the knife and confessed that he was a whoonga user,” he added.

The Durban North SAPS were called and the suspect was arrested.
