THE Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation recently held its annual golf day at the Mount Edgecombe Country Club. Founder of Pink Phoenix and uMhlanga resident, Sharon van Straaten, said the day was a resounding success with fundraising targets surpassing R70 000 which will go towards various initiatives.

The foundation has a number of projects, which includes Kids 4 Life, which financially assists children diagnosed with cancer under treatment in pediatric oncology, and the awareness initiative, Brave & Beautiful, which tells the story of cancer survivors in the hope of inspiring others battling the disease. Van Straaten added that the long-term goal for Pink Phoenix is to establish a support centre which will offer nutritional, psychological, physical and group support to cancer survivors and their families.

Members of the Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation, Wendy Gordon, Engela Hanno, Alison Van Onselen, Sharon Van Straaten, Paula Tavolari and Ronicka Sirputh.

“While we have various projects, the funds raise on the golf day will go towards supporting the costs of Cancer treatment for both children and adults registered on the Pink Phoenix Funding Program. We were concerned in the lead up to the golf day because the weather hadn’t been great and it was raining but luckily for us the rain stopped just in time to clear for a wonderful day for all players,” van Straaten explained.

Every player on the day went home with a prize while Walter Luyt and Darryl Steyn, took home the Pink Phoenix Winners Shield as the winning team on the day.

“We had a scrumptious spit braai and a gin bar and all the players enjoyed glasses of pink gin. We had a very successful auction and prizes galore resulted in a very successful Golf Day fundraiser, which raised over R70 000 for our cause. I’d like to thank all those who gave their time to our cause and who supported us through the golf day. Next year we are aiming on surpassing the amount raised,” she said.
