Visit Durban North mosque on open day

The idea behind the open day is to welcome individuals of various backgrounds to learn more about Islam, and forge stronger connections between different religious communities.

MOSQUES across the country will be opening their doors on Heritage Day as part of the National Mosque Open Day.

According to Dr Faisal Suleiman, chairman of the South African Muslim Network (SAMNET), the idea behind the open day is to welcome individuals of various backgrounds to learn more about Islam, and forge stronger connections between different religious communities.

One of the participating mosques this year is Musjid ur Rahmaan situated on Kenneth Kaunda Road (Northway). The open day will take place on Tuesday, 24 September from 2pm to 4pm.

“The mosque open day has built on an idea of similar type events in Europe and the USA. For me it’s to make people of all faiths feel welcome visiting mosques and learn about Islam,” explained Yusuf Desai, a member of the Durban North mosque.

“There will be a powerpoint presentation on the day and a tour of the mosque. We also have a few Islamic art displays and henna designs. We will also have some coffee and food to offer on the day. As part of the Durban North Muslim community I encourage residents to come and see what a mosque is all about. Everyone is welcome,” he said.

Durban North resident and City tour organiser, Alison Chadwick, said she was looking forward to supporting the event on the day.

“I love learning about new cultures and religions so for me this is going to be an exciting day. I recently had the opportunity to visit a mosque in the City and it was a wonderful experience. I’ve already asked some of my friends to come down on the day and be part of the open day,” Chadwick said.
