City to upgrade informal settlements

The new approach aims to foster a functional relationship between the state and the urban poor.

THE eThekwini Municipality’s Executive Committee met on Friday, 13 September to table a report outlining the new implementation of upgrading informal settlements. The initiative aims to ensure the lives of residents living in informal settlements are improved.

The municipality’s acting head of communications, Mandla Nsele released a statement saying the new approach will focus on integrated upgrading to foster a more functional relationship between the state and the urban poor for more effective social capital formation.

“The approach is also aimed at including key special services such as early childhood development, schools, clinics and access to public transport and economic opportunities,” he said in his statement.

The report recommended that the Incremental Services Programme takes into consideration the new approach to informal settlement upgrading. The report tasked the Informal Settlement Upgrading Strategic Forum with securing additional resources to improve institutional and transversal coordination. The report further recommended the upgrading of the list of informal settlements for 2019/20 be approved in order for funding to be allocated for the various incremental service projects earmarked.
