The perfect braai-side-dish

Geraldine Cronje and her family enjoy the simple but satisfying dish at least once a month.

SEPTEMBER marks Heritage Month in South Africa and Northglen News’ Danica Hansen tracked down residents living in our area of coverage and honed in on the various dishes they prepare distinct to their cultural heritage. Besides cuisine Heritage Month also pays homage to our 11 official languages.

According to government the month also recognises aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and intangible: creative expression such as music and performances, our historical inheritance, languages as well as the popular memory.

Every week during the month of September we will share one recipe.

This week, Glen Anil resident and Danville Girl’s High School Department Head, Geraldine Cronje shared her quick and easy microwave mealie bread, a symbol of Afrikaaner culture and stable at many braai-side dinner tables.

Cronje said the dish represents her Dutch heritage.
“It’s your typical mealie brood. It goes very well with braai vleis or with potjie kos and it’s made with traditional mealie meal,” she said.

While Cronje recalls eating this bread while growing up, the microwave version simplifies the recipe to fit in with the demands of modern life.
“Making a proper bread can be quite a complicated recipe, this one is quick and easy. It literally takes 15 minutes from beginning to end. I got the recipe from my husband’s aunt who lives on a farm in the free state,” she added
