Durban women unite against gender-based violence

Tamsyn Allison, who spearheaded the movement, said women should not be blamed for acts of gender-based violence.

ABOUT 100 women took to the steps of the Durban City Hall last night to express their anger at the recent killings of women and children in South Africa.

The women, and a few men, gathered to call for an end to gender-based violence that has left South Africans reeling.

The gathering was spearheaded by Durban North resident, Tamsyn Elaine Allison who told the crowd waving placards and shielding candles that: “If men cannot stop themselves from raping us, they must stay home behind a locked door. They must go out with permission with cameras with trackers,” she said.

Allison said women should not be blamed for acts of gender-based violence.

“It is not my responsibility to keep spending money to go to police stations to beg for protection to save my life,” she added.

The Durban gathering was one of many held around the country in remembrance of slain UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana.
News of her brutal murder broke on Monday. It is alleged the UCT student was lured to a post office, raped and bludgeoned to death.
