Residents warned to avoid polluted uMhlanga Lagoon

The matter is still under investigation with the eThekwini Pollution Department.

THE eThekwini Municipality has advised residents to avoid swimming or fishing near the uMhlanga Lagoon after a sewage spill upriver at the River Pumpstation in the Blackburn area. Residents who live nearby were concerned by the scores of dead fish scattered along the lagoon banks, foul smells along the coastline and pitch black waters last week.

“While awaiting water results from the samples sent to the lab, the community is advised to refrain from all activities relating to the polluted water,” said spokesperson for the municipality, Msawakhe Mayisela.

He added that the matter is still under investigation with the eThekwini Pollution Department.

“All sections involved are yet to submit a report of their findings,” he said.

After dead fish were discovered on the banks of the uMhlanga Lagoon, emergency measures were taken to address the issue.

“Immediately after receiving the complaint, samples were collected and sent to the lab to ascertain the levels of pollution,” said Mayisela.

The uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct reported the matter to the eThekwini Pollution Department  last week.
