Residents tackle Bridgevale Valley clean-up

More than 50 bags of rubbish were collected by residents who found a number of items dumped, including election posters, empty wine bottles and plastic buckets.

RESIDENTS and a few learners from Chelsea Preparatory chipped in to help clean-up Bridgevale Valley on Saturday. More than 50 bags of rubbish were collected by residents who found a number of items dumped, including election posters, empty wine bottles and plastic buckets. The clean-up was spearheaded by Carri Lambert, a member of the Enviro Fixers-Durban North team.

Enviro Fixers are run by a group of passionate residents uplifting and beautifying Durban North. The group also safeguards the environment by replacing alien invader plants with indigenous plants.

Speaking to Northglen News, Lambert said she was pleased with the turnout.

“It was great to have some of the learners from Chelsea Prep chipping in to help out. It’s also always great seeing the community get involved the way they did as well to help keep Bridgevale Valley clean. We also had the guys from Smile and Wave, a community clean-up initiative come on board and help out which was great. I must say since the rehabilitating programme has started, there hasn’t been as much rubbish as there used to be, having said that we managed to fill more than 50 bags on the day,” she explained.

Learners from Chelsea Preparatory, Nicola Janse Van Resnburg and Ruby Gaines also lent a hand at the clean-up on Saturday.

The rehabilitation project at Bridgevale Valley is a collaborative effort between the City’s Parks Department and Enviro Fixers-Durban North.

In the past the valley had been the site of illegal dumping and was allegedly being used by criminals to gain access to homes on the park’s periphery. The space was also severely infested with alien invasive species meaning residents could not use the valley.

Now thanks to the City, a one kilometre circular track has been cleared and work on the removal of some alien species has taken place in the last 18 months.
