Haematology unit at Netcare uMhlanga Hospital offers hope to patients with blood disorders

The haematology unit provides a sterile environment to ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients with blood cancers.

In the year since a new haematology unit opened at Netcare uMhlanga Hospital, hundreds of patients with blood disorders have benefited from the specialised medical treatments provided there.

The haematology unit serves as a referral centre for patients from across KwaZulu-Natal and parts of the Eastern Cape, and several successful stem cell transplants have also already been performed at the unit.

The haematology unit comprises 20 general beds and six specialised isolation rooms. It is housed on the third floor of Netcare Umhlanga Hospital. The isolation rooms provide a sterile environment to ensure best clinical outcomes for patients with blood cancers such as leukaemia, myeloma and lymphoma, as well as for patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplantation. These patients would otherwise be vulnerable to life-threatening infections.

The unit is headed by a team of highly skilled and specialised clinical haematologists, namely Drs Dhaya Moodley, Natasha Sewpersad and Rohaan Badree. They are supported by dedicated nursing professionals with extensive experience in chemotherapy administration and infection prevention and control; healthcare practitioners offering psychological support to patients; and administrative, cleaning and catering personnel.

Patients furthermore benefit from access to all the specialists based at Netcare uMhlanga Hospital including specialist physicians, cardiologists and surgical sub-specialties.

Drs Moodley, Sewpersad and Badree have consulting rooms in the adjoining Netcare uMhlanga Medical Centre, providing patients with the option for outpatient chemotherapy.
