As part of its Women’s Day operations, the stop-and-search was an all women-led police operation with officers from Durban North, Phoenix police stations and Metro Police officers involved.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, more operations like this would continue to take place on the highway to curb drunk driving and other traffic offences.

“Most of Friday’s fines involved motorists driving without licenses or unlicensed vehicles. We did have a few motorists complain about waiting for a long time because we narrowed the M4 to one lane going south, however this operation was about keeping motorists safe,” he said.

Just hours after the operation which occurred on the Swapo Road (Broadway) off-ramp, one person was killed in a head-on-collision on the M4 near eMdloti.
