Anger over Golden Hours market theft, vandalism

The thieves stole tablecloths and broke into a number of the stall holders' huts taking various items.

LYN Wilson has expressed her anger and disappointment over the theft and vandalism of the Golden Hours Market over the weekend.

Wilson who has run the market in aid of the Golden Hours School for the last 20 years said thieves stole tablecloths, broke into a number of the stall holders’ huts and cut the protective awnings that shelter the stall holders.

The vandals also cut a hole in the fence and broke the gate to the market on Radar Drive.

Wilson said she was saddened that those responsible would target the market which raises funds for the Golden Hours School.

The school looks after children with special needs.

“We traded as normal but it was incredibly disheartening to see someone go to this length to target our market. The huts that were broken into had items taken including R600 in cash. I think the thieves were looking for money to take. It’s also heartbreaking for the vendors and volunteers who help out at the market.

“I’m concerned they may come back because it looks like they may have been disturbed. At the moment, one of our main concerns is cutting back the bushes around the perimeter of the market which gives residents a clear line of sight to see if anyone is up to no good,” she said.

Wilson said one of the positives to come out of the theft and vandalism was the response from the north Durban community and the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page admins.

“They’ve all been great and Kerry Haylett and Jade Phillips have rallied to help our market which has been heartwarming. The messages of support for the market has also been great to see,” she said.
