Education forms the focus of International Youth Day

According to the UN, only 10 per cent of people have completed upper secondary education in low income countries.

WHILE South Africa commemorated youth as the nation remembered the Soweto uprising of 1976 on 16 June, the global community sets aside today, 12 August as International Youth Day (IYD). Commemorated since 2000, IYD is an  awareness day designated by the United Nations.

According to the UN website, this year’s theme, “transforming education, highlights global efforts to make education more relevant, equitable and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves.

“International Youth Day 2019 will examine how governments, young people and youth-led and youth-focused organisations, as well as other stakeholders, are transforming education and how these efforts are contributing to the achievement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Statistics remind us that significant transformations are still required to make education systems more inclusive and accessible,” read the site.

Among the gripes to be addressed is appropriate language for teaching as a massive 40 per cent of the global population is not taught in a language they speak or fully understand.

Attendance is another major issue as only 10 per cent of people have completed upper secondary education in low income countries and over 75 percent of secondary school age refugees are out of school.
