13 arrested for drunk driving on M41

The drivers were arrested on the M41 uMhlanga off-ramp over the weekend.

MORE than 150 drivers were arrested and charged for drunk driving across Durban over the last week, confirmed Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, Metro police spokesperson.

Of that alarming number, 13 were arrested in a joint operation between Durban North SAPS and Metro Police on the M41 near uMhlanga.

Sewpersad said Metro Police would again be out in force this long weekend to arrest errant drivers.

“We are seeing the number of drivers still taking a chance and putting other motorists’ lives at risk by driving drunk. We’ve had numerous roadblocks over the last month and we will again be out in full force over the long weekend to keep road users safe,” he said.

He also warned residents around Durban who were using social media to warn others about roadblock locations saying they could be charged with defeating the ends of justice if caught.

“This does not solve the problem, it lets people know about roadblocks and encourages some potentially dangerous impaired drivers to get behind the wheel,” he said.

As part of their operations, Metro Police also fined 53 taxi, Uber and Taxify drivers for driving without documentation in the uMhlanga area.

“We’ve had several complaints from residents in the area of these vehicles blocking the roads illegally looking for passengers. This is on ongoing operation and there will be more fines issued for those who contravene the law. Metro Police will not be apologetic for doing their job and we will continue with our integrated operations,” he said.
