LISTEN: Rocky start to by elections in North Durban

Issues were reported at Glenashley Junior Primary School where members of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) were allegedly late to arrive at the voting station.

RESIDENTS and the DA candidate have expressed their frustration over various issues at voting stations in ward 35. One of the major issues started at Glenashley Junior Primary School where members of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) were late to arrive at the voting station.

Several residents reportedly left the queue saying they had come early specifically to vote before going to work.

Speaking to Northglen News, DA ward candidate, Nicole Bollman described the situation as ‘frustrating’ saying she knew of three voting stations that did not open on time.

La Lucia resident, Candice Markoem, who was in line in the early morning at Glenashley Junior Primary School also expressed her frustrations at the situation.

“The voting station did not open on time and some residents were so frustrated and angry that they left because of the disorganisation,” she said.

Ward candidate for the DA, Nicole Bollman said she had received complaints from several residents about three voting stations.

However, KZN IEC spokesperson, Thabani Ngwira said the commission was unaware of any problems.

“Nothing has been reported to us. Our colleagues at the various stations have reported to the provincial office that everything is going smooth and that voting stations opened on time,” he said.

According to the IEC, 27 municipal ward by elections are underway today in all provinces except the Western Cape.

Northglen News also spoke to some residents who showed up at the various stations later in the day.
