Prince Umhlangane Road sewage leak causes stench

The ward councillor said the issue had been reported by residents and businesses in the area due to the stench emanating from the leak.

WARD 34 councillor Bobby Maharajh has demanded immediate action be taken to address the issue of sewage which is flowing out of the large sewage pipe running along Prince Umhlangane Road (Riverhorse Valley).

Maharajh said the issue had been reported by residents and businesses in the area due to the stench emanating from the leak.

When Northglen News visited the site with Maharajh last week, waste water had pooled in the middle of the road. Cars driving past send up a spray of waste water putting pedestrians at risk.

“Some people who have reported the matter have reference numbers but the situation has not been resolved. Residents and workers in the area are completely frustrated and it is totally understandable. If you drive on this section with your windows down you are met with an unbearable stench. I’m also concerned for the pedestrians who use the pavements because they are at risk when the sewage and waste water splashes them when vehicles drive past.

“This problem has got to be addressed as a matter of urgency. I’ve now noticed motorcyclists and other vehicles with open canopies drive past extremely slowly so as not to be soaked in waster water,” he said.
