Durban North resident ready to fix M4 fence hole himself

The fence was erected in 2017 but more than a month ago, a hole was cut in the fence prompting security concerns.

A DURBAN North resident says he is ready to fix a hole in the fence line of the M4 Ruth First Highway in a bid to secure the route frequently used by pedestrians, runners and cyclists.

The fence was erected in 2017 but more than a month ago, a hole was cut in the fence raising security concerns. Westbrook said the hole is situated where several violent robberies have taken place in the last few years.

Grant Westbrook, who is also a cyclist, said he rides on the pedestrian walkway along Ellis Brown Viaduct on a daily basis. He is concerned about the safety of others who use the pedestrian walkway on a daily basis.

“The hole was cut in the fence at the beginning of June but despite emails and request no action has been taken by the City. At this point I’m willing to fix the hole myself. I’m part of the Cappuccino Cycling Club and we’ve seen someone make use of the hole in the fence. I do feel those who use the pedestrian walkway are in danger. This has been the sight of various robberies and violent attacks over the years.

“It was why the City put up the fence, to protect visitors and residents. I’m also aware of the two robberies at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve and I’m concerned that this hole could have been used as an access or escape route. Last year we had the Riverside Road security project which reduced the levels of crime and uplifted the area. It only lasted a few months but it made an impact, I would love to see the project implemented again,” he said.

Westbrook said ideally he would like to see a clear view fencing system making it harder for potential criminals to cut.
