uMgeni Park domestic worker nabs criminal in the act

Dumazile 'Happiness' Ngubane managed to lock the suspect in the house without alerting him to her presence.

AN uMgeni Park domestic worker has been hailed a hero after she foiled a housebreaking attempt at her employer’s house on Friday last week.

What is more, Dumazile ‘Happiness’ Ngubane, managed to alert the neighbours who called security and was on hand to see the suspect being arrested red-handed.

Ngubane was working in the kitchen of the Brown’s Drift Road home when she heard a loud sound coming from the main bedroom of the home.

“I was a little scared because I didn’t understand what made the loud noise. I walked quietly down the passage to the room and saw a man climbing down from the ceiling. He had cut a hole in the ceiling board. I don’t think he knew anyone was at home when he decided to break-in from the roof of the house,” she said.

The suspect had cut a hole in the ceiling board to gain access to the property.

“Initially I thought about pressing the panic button but I thought if the man was to panic and run down the passage he would run straight into me and he may hurt me. I quietly walked out of the house and peeked into the bedroom window from the garden and saw the man taking stuff from the room. He hadn’t noticed me. I decided to lock him into the house because that was the best thing to do,” she said.

Ngubane then alerted the closest neighbours who called Marshall Security.

When security arrived, the suspect was loading items from a third room into a gym bag taken from the home.

The suspect stored the stolen items in this bag.

“When I locked him inside I knew he wouldn’t be able to escape and if kept quiet he would continue stealing items while I slipped away unnoticed. I was so happy when security arrested the man and the Greenwood Park SAPS arrived because I knew this man was going to jail,” she said.

Brian Daish from the uMgeni Park Neighbourhood Watch praised Ngubane for her quick thinking.

“She was an absolute hero in this instance. I think homeowners often forget that domestic workers are on the front line when it comes to incidents of break-ins and robberies. They are part of our family and I think Happiness was very brave and did the right thing. Thanks to her there is a criminal behind bars now,” he said.
