Triathlon athlete: Glen’s generosity shines through

Glen Gore recently raised R2 400 for the Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment Centre (PACT).

PRESTONDALE resident Glen Gore is recognised as one of the country’s most decorated triathletes but there’s another facet to the local resident that few know about – his commitment to helping animal charities.

Gore, recently raised R2 400 for the Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment Centre (PACT) just a day before the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban event on the Durban beachfront.

“I did a charity swim before the event and I put out a message that if there were any nervous athletes worried about Durban surf ahead of the Ironman race, they could swim a short course with me. I asked those coming to donate R50 towards PACT and I was pleased I was able to raise more than R2 000 for the charity.

“I know Neeri Naidoo, who founded the charity and I think they do amazing work in the greater Durban area. I know so many of these animal charities do so much for the City in terms of rescues and spaying so I will always help out whenever I can. Last year I also hosted a charity swim to raise more than R2 000 for SerendiPitty Rescue on the north coast,” he said.

Gore said his love for animals is what inspires him to help out.

“So often animal rescues and the SPCA receive little or no funding and I try and help out as much as I can. Last year I met a lady who feeds cats on the Durban promenade and I donated R500 to her cause. There are a number of generous Durbanites out there who give their time to volunteer and raise funds for animal charities and I hope to continue doing what I can, no matter how small the amount is,” he said.

Gore added he also employed several homeless people for some of the triathlon events he hosts as a way of uplifting them.
