VIDEO: What Youth Day means to 5 South African youth

Youth Day and its significance means different things to different people - find out what it means to these students.

THIS year’s Youth Month concurs with the celebration of 25 years of Democracy in South Africa. It only makes sense that the theme is: “25 Year of Democracy: A celebration of youth activism“. It was on this day in 1976 when thousands of Soweto school learners liberated against the usage of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.

The 16th of June became the day when South Africans celebrate those who sacrificed their lives for the struggle against apartheid. The first democratically elected parliament and the subsequent parliaments thereafter have enacted a series of laws aimed at an equal and a non-racial society.

It it through these celebrations when healing from the injustices of the past takes place.
