Khabazela Village homework centre improves learning

Ringi Madwe began the homework centre in Khabazela Village in the hopes of helping the children of the settlement which caters for children from Grade R up to Grade 7.

FOR Khabazela Village resident, Ringi Madwe, putting the needs of others first has always been her main priority. Madwe who is studying to become a teacher has been working with the community for several years in the hopes of making a difference to the residents’ lives and especially in the lives of the children of the underprivileged community.

The township of Khabazela Village is situated around 14 kilometres from Sunningdale and is made up of hundreds of RDP homes.

Recently, Madwe began a homework centre in Khabazela in the hopes of helping the children of the settlement which caters for children from Grade R up to Grade 7.

“I help around 30 children from Khabazela with their homework and whatever they need help with. When I had the idea to help the children, what was lacking was a place to teach the children. A local church was kind enough to let me use their premises and from there the class has grown as word spread about what I do.

“I felt there was a real need in the area because many of the children go to government schools where there are sometimes more than 30 children in a classroom and some of the learners who aren’t able to follow everything and need help with the homework. I don’t specialise in one particular subject and I help the children with whatever homework they are given. At the end of the day, these youngsters are our future and I want to help them achieve their goals,” she said.

While most of the children use their exercise books for the homework centre, Madwe said there were still a few areas she needed help with.

“If there are residents who can help me enhance the childrens’ experience at the centre I would welcome any help. At the moment we are looking for learning charts to help with various subjects. We also need help with crayons and a chalk board so I can teach some of the learners using the board,” she said.

If you are able to help, contact the chairperson, Dumile on 061 820 1938.
