Local resident plans to run every street in Durban

Luc Quevauvilliers (39) is hoping to run every street in Durban by the end of this year and is doing it to raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC).

RUNNING every street in Durban, which equates to more than 1 000 kilometres, by the end of year may seem like a daunting prospect but for local resident, Luc Quevauvilliers, it’s all in a day’s run.

The 39-year-old is hoping to run every street in Durban by the end of this year and is doing it to raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC). Already the DHS Old Boys Running Club member has run every street of Umbilo and Glenwood and part of the CBD after beginning his initiative in April this year.

He was inspired by American runner, Rickey Gates who started the idea.

“After running across the United States in 2017 Rickey decided to run every street of San Francisco. That inspired me to try do the same in Durban, which not many have attempted to do as yet. I love big challenges and from my rough calculations I plan to run about 900km of streets. However, the total distance will be more because of all the backtracking that will be required. I’ve done a little bit of Morningside, Durban North and the CBD,” he said.

Quevauvilliers said the area he has chosen from Durban, extends from Umbilo in the south, and as far as Glenashley in the north, going inland a few kilometres.

“I plan to go as far as uMhlanga towards the end of my goal. There’s really no algorithm I can use, so route planning can be a nightmare. The idea that appealed to me the most was running through the streets of Durban.  I’ve lived in the City all my life but do I really know all of it? I usually run through the streets of the CBD every Saturday and it’s been amazing rediscovering Durban. I was recently joined by a few mates and we had an amazing time running through the City,” he said.

Quevauvilliers said he hoped people would join him on his runs and has even started a Facebook page, Every Single Street Durban.

Speaking on his decision to support CHOC, Quevauvilliers, said he wanted his Every Single Street to have a charity angle.

“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and to see children suffering with this disease really breaks my heart. That’s why I’m urging residents to support the foundation and give back to a worthy cause,” he said.
