Durban’s coast takes a blow with high winds

The current wind speed in Virginia is 9 knots with a gusting speed of 22knots.

A FORECASTER at the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Thandiwe Gumede, confirmed that yesterday’s weather warning is still valid today and high wind speeds will blast the coastline for most of the day.

“The current wind speed in Virginia is 9 knots with a gusting speed of 22knots. The wind is blowing in a South Westerly direction. High winds are expected to continue along the coastline for most of the morning. The wind is expected to start subsiding from the South at about 2pm to drop down to about 30km per hour with a gusting speed of 40km per hour,” said Gumede.

SAWS had predicted winds speeds as high as 35 knots (60km).

According to Rob Byrne of Traffic SA high winds were affecting traffic flow on Bay head road where trucks are queuing, waiting to get access to the Container Terminal.
eThekwini Municipality’s Deputy Head of Communications, Mandla Nsele advised residents to take precautions.

“Residents should be aware of sudden cross winds if travelling, especially between buildings, fallen trees or power lines and flying debris. Do not start open fires. Residents of informal settlements are encouraged to secure their dwellings and are also reminded to apply fire safety precautions as accidental fires can spread rapidly and affect many households,” he said.

Nsele added that small boats must stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour, river estuary or protected bay.

“Parked aircraft should be pointed into the direction of the wind and secured. Stay tuned to the radio and TV for any further warnings,” he said.
