Spike in thefts around north Durban

According to Marshall Security's Tyron Powell, criminals have been fence hopping looking for homes to target.

POLICE have urged residents to ensure their garages, Wendy Houses, granny flats and outbuildings are properly locked to protect them from thefts. In recent weeks areas around North Durban have been targeted in what some consider to be ‘petty theft’.

According to Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell, criminals have been fence hopping looking for homes to target.

“From our call-outs and stats we’ve definitely seen a spike in thefts out of various outbuildings and garages. Around 90 per cent of the time the residents are only aware of the theft when they wake up in the morning. After investigating we’ve noticed that doors leading into a Wendy house or an outbuilding haven’t been locked. Some granny flats also have alarm systems but residents are failing to arm their alarms which makes them easy targets.

“We’ve seen a lull in armed robberies in the area but opportunistic criminals are always on the lookout for ways to steal whatever is available to them. Garages are normally targeted for tools. We are urging residents to look at upgrading their security systems by either using outdoor beams or ensuring their outbuildings are properly secure,” Powell said.

His comments were echoed by the chairman of the Durban North/uMhlanga CPF, Haden Searles, who said these types of crimes, whether deemed ‘petty’ or not needed to be reported.

“As the CPF we urge residents to report the crime not matter how small it is. All crime should be reported. There are definite hotspots in the area and while I wouldn’t say there is a spike in thefts, there is a constant threat. Daily we receive notifications on the various WhatsApp groups regarding thefts out of garages, Wendy houses and the like.

“It is vitally important for residents to secure their properties. Outdoor beams are an effective tool in early warnings. What is also of concern is the fence hopping thieves can sometimes use tools from your garage to pry open windows or doors into your home to steal items. These are opportunistic criminals who prefer hopping over fences than walking along the road due to the police and security patrols. I would also urge residents to keep their fencelines secure so they can have clear sight if there are criminals using their gardens as a thoroughfare,” he said.
