Nicole steps up to raise lupus awareness

Effinham's Nicole Maistry will be participating in this year's ECR Big Walk to raise awareness on Lupus.

RECOGNISED as one of the biggest outdoor events in KwaZulu-Natal, the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk offers residents a chance to stay fit and have some fun. This year, one of the participants, Nicole Maistry, is hoping to do that and more.

Maistry, who was diagnosed with lupus at the age of 19 said she is using this year’s event to highlight the disease and raise more awareness about her support group, Dominate.

According to the Effingham resident, Lupus is a serious life-altering and fatal disease that requires in-depth understanding and support for those affected.

“What is great is the Big Walk takes place just days after World Lupus Day on 10 May. This is my first time participating in the event and I’m incredibly lucky to have my family doing the walk with me. I will be adorned in purple ribbons, which is the symbol for Lupus.

“I will be giving one out to every runner or participant I interact with on the day. I will also be letting them know about Lupus and what it entails. My goal is to see as many purple ribbons when I reach the finish line,” she said.

Maistry will also be wearing her Miss Uniworld sash as she is a brand ambassador for Mrs Uniworld/Mrs Inter-Nations pageant.
