WATCH: The people have spoken-oceans not oil

"We object to you exploring and drilling in this, the last true South African wilderness," read the memorandum.

PROTESTERS toted posters and chanted as they gathered outside the Italian Consulate on Fairway Road in Durban North on Friday, 10 May.

The peaceful protest set the backdrop for Janet Solomon of Oceans not Oil and Jamila Janna of Youth for Marine Protected Areas to hand over and read a memorandum to the Italian Honourary Consul, Costantino Buccimazza who had agreed to hand it over to Italian oil and gas company,  Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (ENI).

“ENI directors, management and staff we, the youth and community of Durban and surrounds, did not and do not give our free, prior and informed consent to your application for exploration drilling,” read the memorandum, “We object to you exploring and drilling in this, the last true South African wilderness.”

Buccimazza said he was acting as a go-between.

“I am encouraged to see the youth showing interest in the environment and I support that,”he said.

The memorandum was handed over together with the South African Youth and Climate Change Coalition, South Durban Community Environment Alliance, FrackFreeSA, People’s Climate Durban, 350.org, Youth for MPA’s and Extinction Rebellion South Africa.
