Residents frustrated with Glenashley voting station woes

The IEC said it was unaware of any of the problems facing ward 35 specifically.

RESIDENTS and uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer have expressed their frustration over various issues at voting stations in ward 35. One of the major issues started at Glenashley Junior Primary School where electoral officials had run out of scanning paper.

Speaking to Northglen News, de Boer said the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials in his ward were unprepared as several other stations ran out of appendix forms.

“I’ve had reports from the NG Kerk, Atholton Primary School voting stations where they’ve run out of VEC or Appendix 4 forms which are for people who aren’t registered in KZN but happen to be here on election day.  I’ve personally photocopied 1 500 forms for the stations. The situation at Glenashley has also been frustrating because the officials had run out of scanning paper.

“I’ve been informed the situation has now been sorted out but it frustrates voters. The station also opened an hour late which is unacceptable,” he said. “Some IEC staff have been outstanding in the face of these problems while others seem unprepared for the voting process.”

KZN IEC spokesperson, Thabani Ngwira said he was unaware of the issues affecting the three stations in ward 35.

“We’ve had a few issues with some stations not having enough forms but those matters were resolved timeously. I’m unaware of any issues at the three voting stations the councillor has mentioned,” he said.

Voting ends at 9pm on Wednesday evening.

The Independent Electoral Commission is expected to release the final results on Saturday afternoon.
