The youth were out in their numbers on voting day to cast their vote.

EARLIER this year the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said more than 700 000 new voters were added to the voters’ roll. That was clearly visible at some of the voting stations around North Durban with many first-time voters casting their vote.

According to IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo, of the 703 794 new registrations over the registration weekends, more than 81 per cent [574 899] are under 30 years old.

First time voter, Jolene Lortan said she was excited to take part in the national elections.

“It’s a new experience and it’s great to have my mom and dad with me and I’m excited to make my mark and make my voice heard,” she said.

Two other first-time voters in the national election, Keanu Joaquim and Kiara Driver said their voting experience went smoothly.

“The IEC officials were very helpful and the whole process was painless and stress free. I think it’s important for people to vote because this is your chance to make a change to the country. You can’t complain about issues facing the country if you haven’t voted,” Joaquim said.
