Over R30-million set aside for skills development

A recommendation of the report was that a political oversight committee be established to monitor the programmes implementation.

A SUM of R30 477 324 has been contributed by different business entities toward the City’s Go!Durban Legacy Fund and Programme that was tabled at an executive committee meeting recenty.

The programme will channel all existing and future contributions for social investment and skills development, flowing from requirements in the Go!Durban Empowerment Charter and the Go!Durban Radical Economic Transformation Specification.

The key focal areas of the programme include supporting talent in sport especially cycling, recognising creative arts and supporting initiatives in communities aimed at youth development. Strategic objective of the proposed programme include youth development and empowerment, fostering innovation and creativity in young people and facilitating social cohesion. Chairman of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Mondli Mthembu said the project will assist in empowering young people in the City.

“It must be correctly implemented to ensure a high amount of beneficiaries especially from the affected areas along the corridors of the Go!Durban project,” he said.

A recommendation of the report was that a political oversight committee be established to monitor the programmes implementation and that the prioritisation programme for implementation must be reported by the end of June.
