Fishermen robbed at knifepoint on Beachwood Beach

Durban North SAPS are looking for two men behind the armed robbery of two fishermen on Beachwood Beach over the weekend.

DURBAN North police have warned anglers to fish in larger groups, where possible, after an armed robbery on Beachwood Beach on Saturday.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the robbery occurred at about 6pm.

“Two of the anglers were approached by two suspects who brandished knives and threatened them. The suspects demanded the victims’ valuables and made off with fishing equipment, a small amount of cash and two cell phones. A case of robbery has been opened at the station,” he said.

The suspects fled on foot into the bushes nearby and are still at large.

“This is the first incident we’ve had in months but we are warning anglers to, where possible, fish in larger groups. Thankfully no one was injured in this incident but we are urging anglers to be wary,” he said.

Deokaran said the station is working on strategies to put in place to protect anglers on beaches in their policing precinct.
