Durban North SAPS goes digital

The video presentation project has been an ever-evolving project encompassing the use of new technology to improve and streamline services to the north Durban community the station protects.

DURBAN North SAPS members have voiced their excitement about a new project which brings their station into the digital era. The video presentation project has been an ever-evolving project encompassing the use of new technology to improve and streamline services to the north Durban community the station protects.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the project involves members of the CPF and has the backing of the Durban North/uMhlanga CPF.

“One of our officers, warrant officer Kenneth Chinnah, who is part of CIMAC, the crime information management and analysis centre drove the initiative to help the members of the community. There are several facets to the project. At the moment, the TV has information pertaining to crime and safety awareness.

“We are also hoping, with the help of community member and videographer, Andreas Mathios, to incorporate community videos on the various officers in the station and their respective portfolios. We are also urging film students who are keen on being involved in the community video project to get in touch with us.

Deokaran said  victims of crime would often wait in the charge office for an officer to help and with the addition of the TV, members of the community were able to learn about other aspects of the station.

“In the future we hope the TV will inform residents at the Community Service Centre (CSC) who needed a detective where they would need to go. We’d also have relevant information for those wanting to renew their firearm licences so residents are able to know what documents to bring,” Deokaran said.

The station said it envisions the use of a touch-screen system offering advice and information in different languages in the long term.
