Bump in the road after M27 roadworks in eMdloti

The speed bumps were temporarily removed while the M27 stretch of road from Verulam into eMdloti was resurfaced.

VEHICLES queue up as drivers come to a grinding halt before precariously inching over the speed bumps on the M27 just before eMdloti. While Terry Rens, chairman of the eMdloti UIP, said speed bumps are a welcome speed-controlling measure in the area, some residents took to social media to say the bumps are too high.

“The speed bumps were temporarily removed while the M27 stretch of road from Verulam into eMdloti was resurfaced. That work was completed a few weeks back, so the bumps have been replaced. There were also rumble strips in between, these have not been replaced,” said Rens.

She added that most of the M27 stretch is maintained by the Department of Transport.

“Their responsibility extends up to the Bellamont Road turnoff. From there down into eMdloti, is the responsibility of the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) which has taken on more and more responsibility since the airport moved to the North. However the ETA have deemed this road unable to have speed humps because of its location to a major arterial route (M4 and N2). Traffic calming of some sort is very necessary,” said Rens.

Rens said the community is hoping to see more speed bumps constructed after a few fatal accidents in the area.

“There have been a number of fatal accidents on both roads hence the Department of Transport installing the speed bumps years ago. However the community would like more bumps further into eMdloti to slow vehicles down as there is more and more pedestrian traffic heading up and down the M27. Tourists and workers use that stretch of road,” she said.
