THE eThekwini Municipality today sent out a statement citing an incident in which one of their employees was arrested in possession of heroin. According to the statement the employee, who works for the Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Unit was nabbed by the Durban Metro Drug Task Team for allegedly dealing in heroin on 21 March.
They added that the employee was granted bail last month.
PRC Head Thembinkosi Ngcobo said Council staff are expected at all times to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner and in ways that does not cast aspersions on the good name of the City.
“The allegation is in total contradiction to this expectation. This is viewed in a serious light and no stone will be left unturned in investigation and implementation of appropriate measures.”
The suspect is a general worker in the PRC Unit.

According to Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Glen Ndlovu, the 35 year-old employee was caught with 18 packets weighing 10 grams each of pure heroin, over R5 000 in cash, a weighing scale, 30X20grams of teething powder (used as a bulking agent) and drug related paraphernalia.
Ndlovu congratulated Superintendent Rajen Moodley, who was in charge of the operation, as well as all involved members. EThekwini Municipality’s City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) head Mbuso Ngcobo said municipal staff are not above the law.
“The City wants to send out a strong and clear message; that no one is above the law. We urge the public to report fraud and corruption so perpetrators can be brought to book,” said Ngcobo.
