Heavy rainfall expected this evening in Durban

Motorists have been urged to reduce their speed while driving and residents are encouraged to remain cautious.

DISASTER  management teams of the eThekwini Municipality are on high alert following the forecast for heavy downpours this evening (Friday, 5 April).

According to the South African Weather Services (SAWS), there is an 80 per cent chance of rain with a possibility of strong winds.

“We are not taking any chances as we are in the grip of climate change. Our disaster management teams are well equipped and ready to respond in every part of the city in the event of a disaster. We are appealing to all our residents to always heed our warnings. By doing so, we would go a long way in saving lives and mitigating unnecessary disasters,” said eThekwini Municipality city manager, Sipho Nzuza.

Residents in low lying areas are urged to be ultra-cautious as localised flooding is expected. Motorists who may be on the city’s roads tonight, are requested to drive safely at all times and reduce speed.

Forecaster at South African Weather Service, Mbavhalelo Maliage has also urged people to be extra cautious as heavy rains are expected in Durban along the Durban South Coast.

“The rain will continue in the morning and is to clear during the day,” said Maliage.
