Want to test your IQ?

Every person who writes the test will be entered into a lucky draw and stand the chance to win tickets to ICON, South Africa’s largest annual comic and games convention.

THE next test for membership of Mensa, the high IQ society, will be held on Saturday, 6 April, in Westville. Candidates will leave with their results on the day, and stand the chance to win tickets to ICON, South Africa’s largest annual comic and games convention which will feature at UKZN’s Old Mutual Sports Hall  from 5 to 7 July. The cost is R130 and students pay a reduced fee of R100, although the test is not suitable for people younger than 16 years and old.

Mensa KZN Testing Officer, Shaun Ryley said the test is in a multiple-choice format and consists of two sections.

“A candidate may join Mensa by passing either section. The first one tests general reasoning, and the second one tests visual-spatial abilities. The test is conducted by a registered psychologist and takes about two hours. Results are confidential, and simply comprise notification of whether the candidate passed Mensa’s criteria for membership or not – you do not get an IQ score,” said Ryley.

Mensa is an international organisation for people who score at or above the 98th percentile on a standard IQ test; that is, in the top two per cent of the population. The local KZN branch is active with about one meeting per month. The meetings vary between social gatherings and ones of a more mentally stimulating nature.
