Violent protests erupt on N3 at Mooi River

The fires have been labelled as a protest against the foreign truck drivers being employed in South Africa.

IF you are travelling on the N3 freeway, near Mooi River, be careful. In the early hours of this morning, seven trucks went up in flames.  This adds to several reports of truck protests since the weekend. The fires have been labelled as a protest against the  foreign truck drivers being employed in South Africa.

SAPS have attended to the scene, but no arrests have been made. Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lt/Col Thulani Zwane said the suspects are unknown at this stage.

“A case of public violence was opened at the Mooi River police station and the N3 between Mooi River and Estcourt was closed,” added Zwane.

South Africa Long-distance Truckers (SALT),  which manage a trucking Facebook page in Africa have been tweeting updates of the protest. Protestors have set trucks alight and blocked the N3 highway.
