Mount Edgecombe Garden Refuse site full to the brim

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said that more than 110 garden contractors frequent the paid site.

UMHLANGA resident, Mark James says that the Mount Edgecombe Garden Refuse site was overflowing when he tried to offload his refuse recently.
While James believes the site has not been cleared for more than a week, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said that the site is serviced twice or three times a day.
“We normally clear refuse numerous times a day as we have over 110 garden contractors that frequent that paid site. Contractors pay per use. Therefore, it can get so busy we fall behind schedule,” he said.
James said that the site was chaotic with people dumping refuse on the pavement because they couldn’t get into the site.

“I was there again on Sunday 3, March and it was chaos. I asked why the site was so full and I was told that all seven of the dump trucks were broken down,” said James.

According to James, the site was impassable.

“I used to be able to drive into the dumpsite, but it was so full I couldn’t drive in and had to unhook my trailer. People are just dumping their refuse on the pavement because they can’t get into the dump site,” he said.

Mayisela said that the site was being cleared.

“Cleansing and Solid Waste is working on the matter, as we are currently removing refuse on site.

“We have already started with stockpiling refuse, so that we can start loading our vehicles,” he said.

Ward 35 Councillor, Heinz de Boer (left) said the site could improve.
“I haven’t received any complaints about that particular site, but we do have a lot of problems with DSW. It was pleasing to see that the household waste side of the site wasn’t piling up, because that presents a health hazard, but I do think the garden refuse side needs to be jacked up a bit, it should not be accumulating to that extent. If it is not dealt with in an acceptable time period, the community should report it to the site manager and can contact a councillor if the issue is not resolved in a few days,” said de Boer.
Mayisela added that residents could use an alternate site if the Mount Edgecombe site was full.

“If and when we are full to capacity, we advise residents to use the next site which would be Malacca Road or the Buffelsdraai land fill site,” he said.
