Burst pipes wreak havoc in uMhlanga

Last week, a large section of the road was damaged after a water pipe burst at the intersection of Kingston Drive and Campbell Drive.

RESIDENTS of uMhlanga have voiced their anger over the continual damage to infrastructure and wastage of water following yet another burst pipe in the area. Of particular concern is Kingston Drive and several interconnecting roads which has seen more than six pipe bursts in the last two years.

Last week, a large section of the road was damaged after a water pipe burst at the intersection of Kingston Drive and Campbell Drive. According to ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, the problem stems from old asbestos cement pipes which are prone to frequent bursts.

He has called on the City to urgently look at a pipe replacement project in the Herrwood Park area.

“The current asbestos cement pipes need to be replaced by the PVC plastic pipes. This particular intersection in Herrwood Park has seen a number of burst pipes and last year, residents and myself held a street meeting to discuss a way forward. I’ve also met with the head of water and other senior City officials to urge them to look at urgently replacing pipes in the area. Some of the asbestos pipes are around 20 years old.

“Kingston Drive in particular has had so many burst pipes that after this has been fixed there is bound to be another burst. A pipe replacement project is desperately needed in the area. The road at the intersection of Kingston and Campbell Drives will also need to be rehabilitated as there is now a sinkhole forming which could potentially damage residents’ vehicles,” he said.
