Durban rescuers lend a hand to Mozambique as Cyclone Idai approaches

A team of 15 rescuers including rescue technicians, advanced life support paramedics and life guards are on their way with six 4X4 vehicles as well as boats and jet skis to assist the community.

DURBAN rescue professionals are on their way to Beira on Mozambique’s coastline where Cyclone Idai, the largest one in a decade, is expected to hit tomorrow, Thursday, 14 March. Gusts of winds estimated to be over 250km hour are set to lash the coastline with an expected rainfall of 300 – 350mls. The current population for Beira is believed to be 250 000.

Rescue Care Paramedics Media spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson said a team of 15 rescuers including rescue technicians, advanced life support paramedics and lifeguards are on their way with six 4X4 vehicles, boats and jet skis to assist the community.

“We wish the teams luck and safe passage during this deployment,” said Jamieson.

“Rescuers from different agencies are currently mobile to Mozambique in anticipation for rescue and relief efforts for the category three hurricane Idai that is set to land on Thursday afternoon. Rescue Care Paramedics, IPSS Paramedics, Rescue South Africa together with Lenmed Hospital Group geared up throughout last night in preparation to leave this morning to Mozambique. The team is mobile to be on standby at Lenmed Maputo Private Hospital,”added Jamieson

Paul Herbst of IPSS said: “The teams will be supported by Lenmed Maputo Private Hospital in the country today, thereafter heading north to Beira where the cyclone’s epicenter will reach land closer to the weekend. Cyclone Idai is expected to be the largest the area will see in a decade.”
