“Our sympathies are with those affected by the heartbreaking tragedy of Ethiopian Airlines, flight ET 302 – 10.03.2019, especially the families and loved ones of the deceased. We cannot speculate on the causes of this accident, or the Lion Air accident in October 2018, which only a full investigation will resolve. Comair will continue to monitor the various investigations by the relevant authorities and are in close contact with both Boeing and the SACAA,” read the statement.

According to the statement, the 737 MAX 8 is one of the most commonly used aircraft in many airlines today and by November 2018, 330 737 MAX 8 aircraft were in operation globally.

The aviation company, which operates in South Africa as British Airways and kulula.com, took delivery of its first of eight Boeing 737 Max aircraft last month. In a statement released on 27 February, Comair said: “As part of its fleet renewal strategy, Comair ordered eight of these aircraft, with the next arriving in March and the last one due for delivery in 2022. It is the first airline in Southern Africa to acquire the 737 MAX 8 and the new aircraft will replace its remaining Boeing 737-400s.”
